How To Prevent Damage from Lovebugs

Lovebugs are a major nuisance that causes expensive damage to vehicles if the proper precautions are not taken, and the dead lovebugs are not cleaned off your vehicle (car, truck, SUV, ATV, RV, etc.) in time.

The damage that comes from lovebugs is due to their bodies containing acid that is known to eat through your clear coat and eventually damage the surface of your vehicle. While damage from lovebugs doesn’t necessarily take place immediately, taking the proper precautions will give you ample time to clean off lovebugs to ultimately prevent damage.

Quickly and Easily Clean Lovebugs off of your Car

If you drive your vehicle a lot during the season when lovebugs are most prevalent, cleaning them off after each drive is probably not a viable option for you. The same can be said about many of us that just don’t have the time to keep our vehicles free of lovebugs because they can be a major problem on highways and interstates in many southern states.

Fundamentally, you don’t have to spend a lot of time cleaning off lovebugs often if you utilize a sealant like TopCoat® F11® to protect the surface of your vehicle. By using TopCoat® F11® after initially washing your vehicle, you’ll help prevent damage from those annoying lovebugs as they prove to be easier to clean off and F11® provides a protective barrier. Consequently, the protective barrier provided by TopCoat® F11® will give you additional time to clean off lovebugs before their dried acidic bodies have a chance to cause damage through etching or eating through your vehicle’s clear coat.

Lovebug Damage is Real and Costly - Prevention is Gold

To prevent damage from lovebugs the best approach to take is a proactive one where you should use a trusted long-lasting sealant like TopCoat® F11® or TopCoat® F11PRO®, which will help ensure that decaying or splattered lovebugs don’t have a chance to eat through your paint’s clear coat. Moreover, the use of TopCoat® F11® or TopCoat® F11PRO® makes cleaning off lovebugs an easier process than it would if you have not treated your vehicle with a sealant. Best of all, because TopCoat® F11® and TopCoat® F11PRO® are water-based formulations that don’t contain any harsh chemicals, abrasives, or VOCs (volatile organic compounds), you don’t have to worry about causing additional damage when wiping away lovebugs. Many times, inferior sealants or detailing products may contain harsh chemicals that react with lovebugs where you may cause micro-scratches, etching, or dulling of your paint or clear coat surface.

Use of TopCoat® F11® or TopCoat® F11PRO® utilizes many advanced technologies that may help fill in micro-scratches that formed with the previous removal of lovebugs. Moreover, TopCoat® F11® and TopCoat® F11PRO®’s self-leveling and Mycroglide technology help to fill micropores to help keep dirt, dust, and even lovebug carcasses from sticking to the surface. Sun-activated self-healing technology in TopCoat® F11® and TopCoat® F11PRO® will also aid to help keep your paint surfaces looking new.

Pro Tip: With surfaces already protected by TopCoat® F11® or TopCoat F11PRO, we recommend using TopCoat® Spritz® as a quick detailer to safely dissolve and remove lovebugs from your vehicle using a clean TopCoat® Mycro microfiber towel or TopCoat® LuvGluv® Hand Mycromitt to reach those tight spaces and crevasses. Lastly, if lovebugs have been stuck on your vehicle for a long time (weeks or months) you may use TopCoat® SapErase® for stubborn stuck-on lovebugs that have dried - but use caution as old and dried lovebugs may have already caused damage.
